Full and Partial Dentures
We do everything possible to save every tooth. Unfortunately, tooth loss is a reality for many people. Replacing missing teeth is vital for your health and appearance. Dentures have been around for hundreds of years. However, with today's modern materials and techniques, in addition to having your dentures properly fitted and maintained in our office, we can provide you with dentures that are of top quality, comfortable, and esthetic.
When all of the natural teeth are missing, a complete or full denture is
fabricated to replace the teeth and provide support for the lips and
cheeks. This allows the patient to eat and speak more comfortably while
preventing sagging facial muscles which can otherwise make a person look
much older. Conventional full dentures are fabricated several months
after all remaining teeth have been removed to allow healing to take
place. Immediate full dentures are made from models taken before the
remaining teeth are extracted so that the dentures can be inserted immediately
after the teeth are removed. In this way, the patient will not be edentulous
(without teeth) for any period of time. However, the tissue will shrink
and change as it heals which can cause the dentures to become loose over
time. This requires the dentures to be relined for proper fit. In certain
cases, implants are placed in the bone and the dentures are made to connect
directly to the implants. The dentures are then much more stable and
secure.
A removable partial denture is a treatment option when only some of the
natural teeth are missing. The partial denture attaches to the remaining
teeth on either side by metal clasps or attachments and helps them stay
in position. When teeth are missing, the remaining teeth may shift making
the area more difficult to clean and causing changes in your bite. There
are times when we choose to keep a few of the remaining teeth to make an
overdenture. These teeth are prepared and used to maintain good bone support
and stability. The overdenture then fits over the prepared teeth.
